Postgraduate CS and AI routes out of India

For an engineering graduate whose bachelor's degree is not in computer science

Researched 24 September 2026 · figures are for the 2027 intake year · verify before committing money

0. What this is

A researched comparison of postgraduate routes into computer science and artificial intelligence, written for a specific and common situation: an Indian engineering graduate whose bachelor's degree is in something other than computer science — mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical — who has since worked as a software engineer and wants either a top European or American master's, or a route to working abroad.

The situation is common and the published advice is mostly useless for it, because almost all of it is written for CS graduates. The single question that decides which universities are even reachable is never the applicant's ability. It is an administrative rule about what the bachelor's certificate says, and that rule differs by country in a way nobody explains up front.

Everything below is sourced from official university and government pages where possible. Section 12 lists what could not be confirmed first-hand.

1. The rule that decides everything

Continental European admissions are transcript arithmetic. A clerk checks credit counts and subject names against a list. There is no dossier read, no allowance for three years of production software work, and in most cases no conversion or bridging route. An applicant with a non-CS bachelor is filtered before a human reads the motivation letter.

These are the literal gates, in each institution's own words:

ProgrammeThe gate
ETH Zurich
MSc Computer Science
Bachelor in computer science, or a closely related quantitative degree (electrical engineering, physics, mathematics) completed with distinction. ETH states that "the basis for admission is ALWAYS your Bachelor's degree." A GRE General Test is required for applicants whose bachelor is from outside the EU-27/EFTA, with published expectations around Quantitative 168, Verbal 159, Analytical Writing 4.5. The Autumn 2027 application window for international bachelors was 1–30 November 2026 only — there is no second window for non-Swiss degrees.
TU Munich
MSc Informatics
A curricular analysis over 140 ECTS from the undergraduate degree. TUM states plainly that if the bachelor's programme did not cover the main subjects in informatics, admission is not possible. Non-EU tuition is now €6,000 per semester.
TU Delft
MSc Computer Science
Same shape — a CS bachelor or a near-identical curriculum.
University of Amsterdam
MSc Artificial Intelligence
Requires, on the transcript, at least 12 EC of computer science plus university-level calculus, linear algebra, and probability and statistics. The programme states explicitly that online courses and work experience are not accepted as substitutes.
KTH / ChalmersRoughly 30 ECTS of specifically listed mathematics plus a programming course, checked line by line.
EPFLSame rigidity as ETH.

The practical consequence: for a mechanical or civil engineering bachelor, the most famous CS and AI departments in continental Europe are closed regardless of how strong the applicant is professionally. This is worth establishing early, because researching them costs weeks and the answer does not change.

One door at ETH does open for mechanical engineers specifically — the MSc in Robotics, Systems and Control explicitly accepts bachelors in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or computer science. It is a genuine route into ETH. It is also a control-theory and robotics degree rather than a computer science one, which is a two-year detour if the goal was software.

2. The continental exception

Saarland University, MSc Computer Science (Saarbrücken, Germany) is the one continental programme where a well-argued dossier can beat the arithmetic. Admission is stated as computer science or a related field, plus an aptitude assessment covering discrete mathematics, analysis and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, numerical methods, stochastics, and theoretical informatics (formal methods, logic, computability, complexity).

It is the best research quality per rupee available anywhere on this page. It is also a single programme with an aptitude gate, so it belongs in a portfolio rather than at the centre of a plan.

3. The UK inverts the rule

The United Kingdom has an entire degree category built for exactly this situation: the computer science conversion MSc, a one-year master's designed for graduates who do not hold a CS degree.

UCL's own course page states that its MSc Computer Science is for graduates with a strong mathematics background in a subject other than computer science, and that it is not suited to applicants who already hold a CS or IT degree. A non-CS engineering bachelor is the preferred input here, not a defect to be explained away.

ProgrammeTuition, 1 yr, internationalEntry bar
UCL MSc Computer Science£42,700UK 2:1 or international equivalent in a non-CS subject, plus demonstrable mathematics to at least A-level Maths standard. 2027 deadline around 27 March 2027.
Imperial College MSc Computing~£45,500First-class honours in any subject outside computing, with demonstrable background or motivation. September 2027 applications open October 2026.
Birmingham MSc Computer Science£34,74060% aggregate, IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 88. September 2027 applications open 1 October 2026.
Edinburgh MSc Artificial Intelligence
(not a conversion course)
£45,4102:1 in informatics, AI, cognitive science, CS, electrical engineering, linguistics, mathematics, philosophy, physics or psychology; a First is the typical offer in practice. Requires a completed programming course on the transcript.

Living costs: Edinburgh estimates £18,504 per year for a postgraduate; London runs materially higher, so budget £20,000–24,000. All-in for one year is roughly £55,000–68,000, or ₹65–80 lakh.

A date that matters. The UK Graduate Route post-study visa is 2 years for applications made on or before 31 December 2026, and drops to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. A September 2027 start finishes in late 2028, so it gets 18 months.

Converting that into work: the Skilled Worker salary threshold is generally the higher of £41,700 or the occupation's going rate, but Graduate Route holders qualify for the new-entrant rate of £33,400, which is what makes them affordable to sponsor early in a career. New-entrant status lasts four years in total, and time already spent on the Graduate visa counts against it.

Summary: the highest admission probability of anything researched here, the fastest at one year, and the worst value per rupee by a wide margin.

4. The US, and the visa arithmetic

American MS CS programmes read a dossier: transcript, statement of purpose, letters, and professional experience, which actually counts. Many dropped the GRE requirement after 2020. Applicants with non-CS bachelors are routine and are typically admitted with prerequisite conditions — data structures, algorithms, discrete mathematics, operating systems, computer architecture — rather than rejected outright.

The H-1B fee, and why it cuts the other way

The $100,000 H-1B fee introduced in late 2025 applies to petitions filed for people who are outside the United States. Students already in the US on F-1, OPT or STEM OPT who later change status are not subject to it.

The effect is counter-intuitive. Employers now strongly prefer candidates already inside the country, because hiring from abroad carries a six-figure surcharge. Published estimates put the cumulative chance of securing an H-1B across a three-year STEM OPT window at roughly two in three, up from about one in two before the change. Studying in the US improves H-1B odds; applying to US jobs from India got considerably harder.

The original proclamation ran twelve months, to 20 September 2026. Confirm on uscis.gov whether it was extended before relying on any of this.

The US offers the highest compensation ceiling on this page and does nothing at all for European residency. Those are different goals, and it is worth being honest about which one is actually being pursued.

5. The cheap credential

Georgia Tech OMSCS — the online Master of Science in Computer Science.

What it fixes. It converts "engineer who works as a developer" into a computer science master's from a top-ten department, on every résumé screen, every EU Blue Card application and every UK Skilled Worker sponsorship form. It is externally graded and exam-based, so it survives hostile questioning in a way self-directed study does not.

What it does not fix. It does not open ETH, TUM or TU Delft. Those admit on the bachelor's degree, always, and a master's does not retroactively change what the bachelor's certificate says.

The asymmetry is the point. Every other route on this page costs between ₹25 lakh and ₹1.1 crore and two years. This one costs ₹6 lakh and runs in the evenings alongside a job or a preparation cycle.

6. The route with no degree at all

For anyone whose actual goal is working in Europe rather than studying there, the fastest route is not a master's.

The EU Blue Card, Germany

The IT-specialist salary threshold for 2026 is €45,934.20, and the university-degree requirement is waived for IT professionals who can show at least three years of relevant professional experience within the last seven years. A software engineer with three years of production experience qualifies today, with no further study.

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)

A points-based permit allowing up to a year in Germany to look for work. Six points are needed:

CriterionPoints
Recognised bachelor's degree (any field)3
English at B21
Three years of professional experience2
Age under 352
Total8

The baseline requirement is A1 German or B2 English; higher German levels add points (B1 adds 2, B2 or above adds 3). Proof of funds runs at about €1,091 per month for the job-search period — money that remains the applicant's own.

From a Blue Card, permanent residence follows in 21 months with B1 German, or 33 months without. That is two to four years faster than any study route on this page, and the price is a language certificate rather than tuition.

The catch is unchanged: a European interview loop on data structures, algorithms and system design still has to be passed. A master's does not remove that requirement — it adds two years and a large sum of money in front of it.

7. What each route costs

Two-year totals unless noted, at approximately ₹100 per euro, ₹110 per Swiss franc, ₹118 per pound and ₹89 per dollar. Re-price before committing.

8. Post-study permits compared

CountryPost-study permitPermanent residenceEU mobility

Netherlands1-year orientation year (zoekjaar)5 yearsYes, plus the 30% expat ruling (now reduced to 27%)

United Kingdom18 months from Jan 2027 (2 years before)5 yearsNo
United StatesOPT 12 months + STEM extension 24 monthsH-1B lottery, then yearsNo

Switzerland is worth singling out because it is so often assumed to be the European end-state. A Swiss degree and a Swiss permit buy Switzerland. They confer no right to live or work anywhere else in Europe, the job-search window after graduation is six months with a fifteen-hour weekly work cap, and permanent residence takes a decade. Graduates of Swiss universities are at least admitted under the "scientific or economic interest" provision, which skips the priority-of-local-workers check — but annual quotas still apply.

9. The internal-transfer on-ramp

A route that is consistently underweighted, because it involves no application to any university at all.

Large international product companies with engineering offices in both India and Europe move staff internally as a matter of routine, typically after eighteen to twenty-four months in the Indian office:

FromTo
Google IndiaGoogle Zurich, Munich
Microsoft IndiaDublin, Amsterdam
Amazon IndiaBerlin, Dublin, Luxembourg
Visa IndiaLondon, Warsaw

The cost is zero, no gap is added to the résumé, and it replaces the hardest filter in the entire process — a cold résumé screen submitted from India — with an internal transfer request backed by a performance record. An engineer at a recognised multinational applying to its European office is a fundamentally different application from the same engineer applying cold.

Companies that sponsor and recruit directly from India, for anyone applying externally: Booking.com, Adyen, Uber Amsterdam, Zalando, Delivery Hero, SAP, Spotify, Klarna, Amazon Berlin and Dublin, Google Munich and Zurich, Microsoft Dublin. The Netherlands, Germany and the Nordics are where the work-life-balance claim generally holds up.

10. Indian food and community

Not a trivial consideration over a two-year degree, and rarely covered in admissions material.

11. The application calendar

Worth laying out because the deadlines are more spread than they appear, and most of them do not collide with an autumn or winter job search.

DeadlineApplies to
30 Nov 2026ETH Zurich, Autumn 2027 — the only window for international bachelors
Mid-Dec 2026 – mid-Feb 2027US MS CS, Fall 2027
Early–mid Jan 2027Aalto, KTH, Chalmers and most Nordic programmes
~1 Feb 2027University of Amsterdam, non-EU applicants
~27 Mar 2027UCL MSc Computer Science
~End Apr 2027Saarland, winter semester starting October 2027
31 May 2027TUM, winter semester (non-EU degrees)

Preparation, in dependency order

  1. Transcripts and degree certificate first. Indian universities take weeks to issue consolidated marksheets. This is the item that quietly kills applications.
  2. English certificate. IELTS Academic or TOEFL, around ₹17,000, valid two years, one sitting covers every school here. ETH requires TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7 at C1 level and the certificate must be submitted by the application deadline — applications missing it are rejected on formal grounds. An exemption exists for a bachelor's degree taught entirely in English, with official university confirmation, so check whether that applies before booking a test.
  3. Two reference letters, preferably academic. For anyone several years out of university, this is the slowest item and should be started first.
  4. One statement of purpose, rewritten per school rather than written from scratch each time. ETH asks for a single A4 page.
  5. GRE only if ETH or EPFL are in the list. Nothing else here requires it, and dropping those two saves roughly ₹22,000 and six weeks of preparation.

12. What is not verified

Some figures here came from secondary sources or summaries rather than the primary page. Confirm these on the official site before any money or decision rides on them.

Exchange rates used throughout are approximate and were current in September 2026.

The comparison worth writing down before starting any of this. A master's costs twenty-four months and somewhere between ₹25 lakh and ₹1.1 crore. The EU Blue Card route costs a language certificate and is available today to any software engineer with three years of experience. Both end at the same interview loop on algorithms and system design.

That does not make the degree a bad decision. It makes it a decision that should be taken for what a degree actually provides — research supervision, a change of field, a credential that outlasts any single employer — rather than as a way around an interview that will be waiting at the end either way.
